What to Do With All Those Brilliant New Year’s Resolutions

What to Do With All Those Brilliant New Year’s Resolutions

New Years is past, now. The confetti swept up and disposed of. The champagne party recovered from. And the sleep you missed nearly made up. What about those resolutions that you made amidst all the sparkle and excitement of welcoming in a new year? Have your forgotten about them already?

Don’t forget about your New Year’s resolutions this year! They are brilliant! Insightful. Beautiful goals that would improve your life if you reached them. Do they feel overwhelming to you? They probably do, but don’t worry! Instead, let us show you how you can make those brilliant New Year’s resolutions actually work for you this year in Surf City.

Pick Your Top 5

Pick Your Top Five

It is so easy to get carried away with making New Year’s resolutions. After all, it is rather fun to think what you could accomplish in the New Year. Exhilarating, even! There is so much potential in a new year. It is easy to decide you are going to accomplish so many amazing things that you end up with a list twenty, thirty, or even fifty items long.

Now, you can’t really expect yourself to make 50 new habits or accomplish 50 new goals (not ones as big as New Year’s resolutions, at least) in just one year. Just looking at such a long list even at the beginning of the year will make you feel so overwhelmed that your breath will freeze in your chest. Instead, think carefully about your New Year’s resolutions. Which ones are really important to you? Which ones are specific enough to actually accomplish? (Such as "take a hot yoga class three times a week” and "cut out sugar and artificial sweeteners 6 days a week” rather than the more generic "lose 10 pounds”.) Pick five specific goals that are important to you - to the success of your year, whether that be in work or in your personal life. (It is good to pick a mix of goals that pertain to both sides of your life.) Then focus on these five goals for the rest of the year.

Family Time

Spend More Time With Your Family

Maybe this is one of your New Year’s resolutions. After all, the incidental business in our lives keeps us far away from our families far too often. Your kids are growing up before your eyes. Their interests changing too fast for the too-busy you to keep up with. You need to spend time with your family just to keep up-to-date with them and their goings ons!

On top of that, though, spending time with your family helps everything else seem more rewarding. After all, much of what you do is for your family. Each day you go to work to put food on the table for those nearest and dearest to you. You work long hours so you can take that special ocean-side family vacation. And you give up your own precious "free” time to take your kids to soccer practice, or on a play date, or to watch them in the school play. The reward of spending more time with your family just having fun will help motivate you to accomplish those brilliant New Year’s resolutions. You will be energized each day, ready to take on the world if you just take some time out for your family, and yourself, each day. An added benefit is that you will make memories that will outlast all your New Year’s resolutions.
