How to Create the Ultimate Beach Day Playlist

How to Create the Ultimate Beach Day Playlist

There are few things that go along with a good day at the beach than great music. Times have sure changed. Kids will never know the fun of making a mixed tape off of the radio (that is a real thing) or understand the fun of vinyl. However, with the advent of the iPod and iTunes, making the perfect beach playlist is easier then ever. This week we have all the information you need to make a jamming playlist to keep you in the Topsail Island state of mind.

Get in the beach state of mind

We all have that moment. You know the one I am talking about. That moment when you hear a favorite song come on the radio. Maybe it’s in the doctor’s office, or in the car. Maybe you’re belting out your favorite tune in the shower.  At the end of the day we all have our favorite songs that take us back to the beach or a special moment. Music is a powerful source one that can turn a dull day into a vibrant symphony of memories of sun drenched days with your loved ones. Can you think back to your childhood and remember your favorite songs? To my daughter’s horror, I know that I do. Let’s get those tunes back in rotation. Parents if you’re like us, you may need your kids to help you with iTunes. However, everything you loved, as a child is just a few clicks away. So break out your best air guitar and follow these three simple steps to creating the ultimate playlist.

Create a vibe

Vibe n. the atmosphere produced by a place or a mood passing between people.

Vibe is all about the way music makes you feel. Since you and the family are heading to the beach for a relaxing week of fun in the sun the vibe is all about relaxing and having fun. Here are a few vibes you could select for your next playlist.

Car windows down, wind in the hair, radio cranked up, the family belting out  favorite tune. Kids all smiles with adventures on the horizon. Better yet, your Topsail Island vacation rental is on the horizon.

Slow lazy romantic getaways with your partner, music gentle and slow, moving in time with the rhythms of the waves cascading over the shoreline.

Beach day with the kids the sun on your face, popular light fun tunes carried on the wind, silly lyrics kids laughing. These are the days family memories are made of.

No matter what scenario you find yourself in the chances are that each of these situations evokes a different emotion for you. That feeling is the "vibe" that your playlist evokes. Building a playlist based on vibe is basically just the method of cultivating a selection of songs based upon a desired feeling. What “vibe” do you want to create during your Topsail Island beach vacation?

Know your audience

Who’s listening? Of course, when you are compiling your playlist you have to consider who your audience is going to be. Kids in the car on a family road trip calls for a different playlist than from a girl’s weekend. The best thing about the modern smartphones is you can make several playlists. I, for one, have one for me and one for family time (hey, kid’s just don’t appreciate Miles Davis when they are young).

Make a music trivia game for the ride

There are all sorts of variations of this, but one that my family loves is to play songs and ask everyone to name the artist and then try and name a place where the family has heard the son before when everyone was together. I remember the horror when my mom and dad revealed the first time they heard a song was while giving me a bath as an infant. Yup, they said it in front of my girlfriend....oh the horror! Nothing makes the time fly by like a music and laughter.

The road trip soundtrack

A fun way to get ready for your drive to Ocean Isle Beach is to gather the kids and sit down together and pick out your favorite songs. What we like to do is alternate songs, one song for mom and dad and one for the kids. Check out YouTube and let the kids see all those awesome music videos from the 80’s. The kids will get a kick out of it. Katrina and the Waves- Walking on Sunshine is always the first song on our family road trip. Ten awesome summer songs everyone will love

Walking On Sunshine, by Katrina & The Waves

Summer in the City, by The Lovin’ Spoonful

School's Out, by Alice Cooper

Stand by Me, by Ben E. King

Summertime, by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh PrinceIn Summer, by Olaf (Frozen film soundtrack)
