Discover Topsail Island’s History
Many visitors to Topsail Island are surprised to learn about our secret history. For several years the island was the location of a top-secret missile program. At that time the island was relatively deserted, and the United States Navy used Topsail Island for what they called “Operation Bumblebee.” You may have noticed around the island there are several “towers” which were used during the missile tests. Whether it rains or not you’ll want to check out the local Missiles and More Museum. The museum covers so much more than just the missile program. Learn all about the local pirates, the Women Airforce Service Pilots, and Camp Davis. The museum features several exhibits and onsite local historians. Skate the evening away
Topsail Island has a secret gem that has been entertaining families for decades. The Topsail Beach Skating Rink was founded in 1964 by Sonny and Doris Jenkins. The rink has been in continuous operation ever since. The rink is an old style roller skating rink with wood floors, classic rock, and a family-friendly atmosphere. Learn all about Sea Turtles
Each year Topsail Island plays host to some very special guests… sea turtles! These regal creatures travel thousands of miles each to the shore of Topsail Island to lay their eggs. Soon a “boil” takes place; this is when the eggs hatch. Soon thousands of small hatchlings scurry to the water's edge. This incredible scene has taken place for thousands of years. For many years the folks at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center have been helping injured sea turtles. This amazing group of volunteers also offers visitors a behind the scenes look at the sea turtles of Topsail Island. One fun thing that the kids will love to do on a rainy day is to go bowling. The Bowlarena in Jacksonville is the perfect place to knock down a few pins and reconnect with the family. Jacksonville also features museums, great restaurants, and other fun activities.
