How to Have The Perfect Rainy Day on Topsail Island
Topsail Island is a beautiful place to visit. Our famous sun drenched beaches and family-friendly atmosphere has made Topsail Island a favorite destination for families for generations. When traveling with kids on the beach a parent's worse fear can be a rainy day. We hate to admit it, but occasionally it does rain on Topsail Island. However, that just means the fun goes indoors. Look at the rain as an opportunity to see some of the hidden gems of the island. Here’s how to have the best rainy day on Topsail Island.
Discover Topsail Island’s History
Many visitors to Topsail Island are surprised to learn about our secret history. For several years the island was the location of a top-secret missile program. At that time the island was relatively deserted, and the United States Navy used Topsail Island for what they called “Operation Bumblebee.” You may have noticed around the island there are several “towers” which were used during the missile tests. Whether it rains or not you’ll want to check out the local Missiles and More Museum. The museum covers so much more than just the missile program. Learn all about the local pirates, the Women Airforce Service Pilots, and Camp Davis. The museum features several exhibits and onsite local historians. Throughout the year there are several programs that you won’t want to miss. Discover more about the museum by Clicking here.
Skate the evening away
Topsail Island has a secret gem that has been entertaining families for decades. The Topsail Beach Skating Rink was founded in 1964 by Sonny and Doris Jenkins. The rink has been in continuous operation ever since. The rink is an old style roller skating rink with wood floors, classic rock, and a family-friendly atmosphere. It is the perfect place to spend a rainy evening on Topsail Island or any evening for that matter. Check out the video to get a sneak peak of the Topsail Beach Roller Rink.
Take a day tripOne of the best features of a Topsail Island beach vacation is our convenient location to several of the areas best attractions. The island is just a short drive away from Wilmington, NC which is a beautiful port city that features a lot of amazing attractions. On a rainy day you could explore the Battleship North Carolina or check out the river fronts many shops and restaurants. You’ll never want for things to do in Wilmington
Family game day
Don’t let a little rain dampen your family’s spirit. Take advantage of the quiet time and reconnect with the family. All of our vacation homes and condos are well appointed and are the perfect way to just sit back and play your favorite games. Locations like Shipwatch Villas offer spectacular oceanfront views that make any day a beautiful day. Sure kids love all the digital gadgets, but everyone loves a game of Pictionary, Scrabble or maybe a marathon game of Monopoly. No matter what game your family likes to play they’ll remember the time you spent with them.
Family movie night
Grab the popcorn, hit the Redbox and get ready for a family movie night. All of our vacation homes and condos feature televisions and DVD players making them perfect for a rainy evening. Of course, you can also bring a movie along on your vacation so you have one. Pick a beach themed movie like Weekend at Bernies or if you really want a scare, Jaws! Make sure to put the phones, iPads, iPods, and laptops away. This is all about family night.
Learn all about Sea TurtlesEach year Topsail Island plays host to some very special guests… sea turtles! These regal creatures travel thousands of miles each to the shore of Topsail Island to lay their eggs. Soon a “boil” takes place; this is when the eggs hatch. Soon thousands of small hatchlings scurry to the water's edge. This incredible scene has taken place for thousands of years. For many years the folks at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center have been helping injured sea turtles. This amazing group of volunteers also offers visitors a behind the scenes look at the sea turtles of Topsail Island. Spend a day at the center and get out of the rain and discover one of the truly magical parts of Topsail Island.
As we mentioned above Topsail Island is ideally located near several of the region's attractions. One of those is Jacksonville, NC which is just a short drive away. One fun thing that the kids will love to do on a rainy day is to go bowling. The Bowlarena in Jacksonville is the perfect place to knock down a few pins and reconnect with the family. Jacksonville also features museums, great restaurants, and other fun activities.
