Boat safety tips

Before you plan any boat outing there are a few important things to consider. Safety is always the most important item to review before hitting the water, so here are five things to think about before hitting the water for the day:

Take a boater safety course

Boats are fun and most are easy to operate, making them very popular, but they do come with a lot of responsibility. Boats, like cars can be very dangerous if mishandles. The first step any boat owner should take is learning the rules of the sea. There are Boater Safety courses that are cheap, frequently offered and often required depending on the age of the operator. Bottom line is know the Coast Guard Rules before you hit the water.

Never boat while under the influence

Operating a boat while under the influence is illegal and strictly enforced in North Carolina. Always have a designated driver if you are going to be consuming any alcohol. The penalties are severe, and you owe it to yourself, other boaters, and your passengers to be responsible.

Check the weather

If you are familiar with the North Carolina coast you know the weather can change rapidly. Drastic shifts in winds can have a huge effect on the seas, the currents and your boat. Whether sailing or using a powerboat it is important to always stay up to date with the weather. The best way to do this is by using the marine radio that offers constant weather updates.

Know the area you are boating in

If you are new to the area or even familiar with the area, but new to boating it is important to familiarize yourself with the local geography.  There are several ways to ensure you stay safe and don't get lost. Modern GPS, Lorans and even apps on smartphones all make navigation a cinch. Of course, having a set of local charts is alway a good idea.

Don’t overload the boat

How many times have you seen a boat on the water loaded down with people? Looks fun, but an overloaded boat is no laughing matter. You should never exceed the boat manufacturer's recommended load capacity. An overloaded boat can become unstable resulting in the boat capsizing or sinking.

Boat ramp etiquette

Boat ramps can be a bit chaotic in the busy months. Having a plan before you get there can make launching and recovering your boat a lot less stressful. Make sure to know who is going to watch the kids, who is going to be on the boat and be responsible for tying it up. Where are you going to park. Make sure you truck or vehicle is capable of pulling your boat out of the water. Every day someone tries to tow something too big. Be courteous and patient when at the ramp. A little boat ramp etiquette goes a long way.

Local boat ramps

In North Topsail Beach there is a boat ramp on Shrimp Lady Lane under the high-rise bridge. It has loads of parking.

Surf City's public boat ramp is located at Soundside Park near the swing bridge.

The Town of Topsail Beach (on the south end of the island) also has a boat ramp offering access to the Intracoastal Waterway. The ramp is located on South Anderson Boulevard just past Town Hall in downtown Topsail Beach, and is set up as a self-pay, self-use ramp.
